A wonderful reimagining of Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy through the lens of Masami Yuuki (creator of Patlabor). This take on the legendary character is more action-oriented, but it still retains the core themes of the original series. Artist Tetsuro Kasahara's detailed robot designs are sure to delight any mecah manga fan. A welcome addition to the enduring legacy of Astro Boy.
Ah, the age old tale of childhood obsession turned adolescent angst made manifest as a malevolent horse spirit. Who can't relate? The real draw of this book are Tezuka's incredible page compositions and striking illustrations that just explode off the page. Bomba! exemplifies why Tezuka is known as the God of Manga. Truly a master of his craft.
In an alternate future timeline the Batman is presumed dead and in his absence Gotham has become a police state. Masked vigilantes have been outlawed and it's former Robin Jason Todd's job to bring them in while secretly trying to tear down the system from the inside. This is a mainstream superhero comic for manga fans. Stylish design work reminiscent of Akira, with kinetic illustrations all presented in traditional black and white. Future State: Gotham is a loving homage to manga and not mere imitation.
Dubbed "French-style manga" Last Man has all your favorite tropes. A mysterious stranger! A plucky young warrior in training! Martial arts tournaments! And more! Albeit set against a Euro-fantasy backdrop, and with a surprising twist. Artist Bastien Vivès' sparse linework has a simple elegance while simultaneously being detailed and expressive. Perfect for fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender or Dragon Ball, but make no mistake, this is not a kids book.
Here it is in all of its glory. Clowes' (mostly) complete Eightball anthology in one bargain softcover. Here you will find all of his seminal stories including Ghost World, Art School Confidential, Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron and many more painstakingly reprinted in their original format. A must have for any alternative comics fan.
At times heartbreaking, at others hilarious. Eight bizarre tales of a woman who lives with all 100 of her ex boyfriends, a drug that can turn one invisible, the particulars of sasquatch lovemaking and more are unlike anything you've read lately. Tackling themes of regret, loneliness, identity, and trauma, these stories pack a lot of emotional punch while maintaining a wonderful albeit dark sense of humor.
