Karsten has been experimenting with the straw bale gardening method for several years. In his book, he lays out detailed step- by-step instructions for how to purchase, arrange, condition, and plant in your bales, which essentially feed your plants as the straw composts down. The benefits include easy access due to their height, a disease-free, weed-free, stone- and clay- and gopher-free planting medium, moisture retention, compost material, and the ability to grow on just about any surface.— Kim
