Veri's Picks

VeriVeri. There once was an unruly little girl who lived in a small village far away somewhere in Europe. We are not quite sure how she came here, since she only speaks English with a heavy accent, but something like this must have occurred: Little Verena used to read in class instead of paying attention to her English teacher, and so her parents decided: “We shall send the brat to the New World, where they will discipline her and teach her to speak that damn foreign language Arnold Schwarzenegger speaks. Then she will return humble and yodel without complaint.” Their plan failed. She stayed here to marry a boy with unruly hair, work at this bookstore, and study at Yavapai College. Among her least favorite words are: very, google, vehicle, and people.

In this hilarious sequel to A Dirty Job, the soul merchants of San Franciso continue their fight against the underworld. Be ready for a shrieky banshee, meat puppets, ghosts, and the usual confusion. What makes this novel great is an older, sassy-as-can-be Sophie. As in its prequel, you will giggle all the way through, interrupted only by regular outbursts of laughter. I highly recommend it for the “Not-So-Easily-Offended.” —Veri

This novel is a German classic and one of my all- time favorites. It will not only entertain you, but also challenge your morals, false pride and black-and-white thinking. It's beautifully written and the author has a way of capturing you and not letting you go. —Veri
