About the Artist

Dana CohnDana Cohn was born in Long Beach, California in 1966.  Raised in Prescott, Arizona he attended undergraduate school at Augustana College before earning his MFA from Yale University School of Art in 1993.  He currently lives and works in Prescott, AZ. Dana teaches painting and printmaking at Yavapai College, and printmaking at Prescott College in Arizona.

The artist's statement: I create art that is as close to nature as I can get. I take part in paintings that are brand new every time and simultaneously, a collective of the single painting we follow throughout life. Painting broadens my perspective in a more powerful way than anything else I have ever felt. The experience is a walk through a beautiful place that leads to the rewards of the journey. My paintings exemplify the struggle between the forces of good and evil, of nature versus technology. The holy geometry of the golden section that is in and around us all is the inspiration for these paintings. The golden section is the primary force in painting; the inspiration that comes from a ram’s horn can be seen in a ladybug. Templates come from Da Vinci, a pine cone, or an elephant’s foot, all of which are the beginning of a never-ending painting. Geometry of the natural world portrays love in every aspect of our universe, our society and ourselves.

I am always amazed at the variety of feelings people take away from paintings. The prospect of the love I have for my own work multiplying through other people is exciting and propelling. Painting is a life within a life; the canvas is the home and the oil is the food dug out of the earth with care and still alive. Energy in artwork is a magnet. I paint for the love of painting.
