Come to the Peregrine for a free 90 minute performance by local actors Lane and Karla Burkitt!
The Burkitts will perform their original play, “John and Jessie,” about the unique partnership of John and Jessie Frémont: a marriage of two strong personalities that succeeded despite a turbulent life in the center of public events during the late 1800s in Prescott.
About John and Jessie Frémont
The John C. Frémont House was built in 1875 and was moved to the Sharlot Hall Museum grounds in 1971. Frémont was governor of Arizona from 1878 to 1881. Prescott, as Arizona’s territorial capital in the late 1870s, was home to Frémont. Johen Frémont was many things, including a pathfinder and mapmaker, a California senator, a Civil War general, a presidential hopeful, an accidental gold millionaire, and a would-be railroad magnate. This Western legend also served as the fifth territorial governor of Arizona. The home, built in 1875, housed Frémont and his wife, Jessie Benton, daughter of Thomas Hart Benton and a strong character in her own right. Standing today on the grounds of Prescott’s Sharlot Hall Museum, the sophisticated construction of the Frémont house reflects Prescott’s rapid growth after creation of the Arizona Territory in 1864.
About the Actors
Laark Productions emerged as the combined artistic and business concept of Karla and Lane Burkitt who have participated in the performing arts in Arizona for the last 30 years. Northern Arizona seems the perfect place for a production company with a focus on quality of production values and quality of experience for the actors, crew and audience. A Midsummer Night's Dream produced in partnership with the Highlands Center for Natural History was an ideal launch for our new endeavor. We support the mission of the Highlands Center and felt there was no better way than to join in their annual fund raiser for 2014: Shakespeare in the Pines. In 2015 we partnered with the Highlands Center, Camp Verde Library and Arcosanti to develop new audiences and share our love of theater with our Arizona neighbors. 2016 launched a new relationship with Yavapai College in Camp Verde as we brought our first tragedy, Hamlet, to their outdoor stage.
